Why we built BillFresh on WhatsApp

Why we built BillFresh on WhatsApp

Every expense tool has the same fatal flaw: it asks people to change their habits. Download a new app, remember a new login, learn a new interface — all to file a $12 taxi receipt. Unsurprisingly, most receipts never make it into the system at all.

When we started BillFresh, we asked a different question: what if the tool came to the user instead? Across Asia, WhatsApp is the one app everyone already opens fifty times a day. There is nothing to install, nothing to learn, no password to forget.

The result surprised even us. Teams that historically submitted receipts three weeks late — crumpled, faded, half of them missing — now send them within minutes of the transaction. The photo is taken at the till, not at month-end.

Chat is also a radically honest interface. If the AI misreads a receipt, the user just replies 'wrong' and corrects it in the same thread. No support ticket, no settings page, no manual. The correction itself becomes training signal.

Building on someone else's platform has real costs — rate limits, policy changes, message pricing. But the alternative is building on the platform nobody opens. We know which one we would choose again.
